In cases where you have damaged system components, or perhaps need to revert to a prior system version after recently upgrading, then restoring a backup may be the best approach. When you are formatting disk on Mac, keep some things in mind.Starting with OS X 10.5 'Leopard', the backup program 'Time Machine' was included with all Macs. Time machine uses an image-based backup system to make periodic and complete backups of a Mac's hard drive.
![]() I'm still worried that the Time Capsule backup might be corrupted, but it seems to work so far. Even then Time Machine takes a long time to get started again with Time Capsule. I have to delete the program and trash it and then restart the computer. Not only does it not work, but it shuts down access to Time Capsule. Disappointed to say the least: The program works fine with external hard drives, but it does not work with my Time Capsule. Change word for mac to us english spellingIt does not operate on the same principles as external hard drives. He does not seem to understand that Time Capsule does not "mount" drives. The tech insists that there isn't a problem and that I should mount the hard drive. ![]() Then following the Sophos trail path of file folders after folder, I could delete my Malware zipped file. Too bad I did buy it the then. This tool is great even in demo mode, I removed the Malware after checking the box to "Invisible Item" all hidden files popped up, my user/library file folder. Deciding, I turned to "Back-in-Time 3", I remembered, I saw an offer from MacUpdate muPromo at 50% off back in late June. After giving it the old college try and few hours later. So I fussed around looking at all the instruction on how if possible, to do what was needed. On the other hand, TM waits until the very last step of the restore process to suddenly tell me I don't have permission to access the files I'm trying to restore. I simply drag the files out of BIT to my desktop or whatever folder I want. Lastly, I have created a virtual copy of my Time Capsule backup in BIT so I can quickly check first to see if the data I want is available before mounting the Time Capsule backup (the virtual copy takes up very little space - only 650 MB for a 900 GB backup). The other reason I use BIT instead of TM is that I don't get permissions errors with BIT like I often do with TM. And if I prefer, I can ignore the Time Capsule backup and work only with another one that I have on an external drive (the problem with TM is that it insists on loading all available backups). In contrast, BIT only needs 10 seconds or so to scan the same Time Capsule backup. If I enter Time Machine, I end up waiting about 5 minutes for it to scan my 900 GB Time Capsule backup before it will let me do anything. Program Time Hine How To Use ItWhile there are features I'd like to see the developer has been responsive and forthcoming.I took off half a a star because there are some interface tweaks that could be used to clarify things just a little bit more (like the drive/folder listing) and a more efficient way to search for recently back-up files across ALL disks and arrays, not just a single one - but these are minor quirks for such a useful utility. While the idea of constant-backup with versioning is great, the practice of the Time Machine restore interface was lacking for our setup. We have several Macs at our small office, all have Time Machine backup disk arrays of 4TB or more (one is 10TB at the moment.) Back in Time makes working with the backups simple, even if you're working with a disk or disk image from another machine which is where Back-In-Time has saved me the most.Look, if this review sounds overly glowing, I can't help it, this utility paid for itself over and over. More importantly, it makes managing specific files within a Time Machine backup much more granular and simple. The UI is not very intuitive, but once you get the hang of it, it's a far easier, faster and more reliable way to work with TM backups than Time Machine itself. This application has saved my rear end quite a few times. The other nice thing about BIT is that it doesn't take over my entire screen, and I can use other apps at the same time as BIT.My only (minor) complaint with BIT is that it takes some time and a thorough read of the manual to figure out how to use it.
